Experience the Power of Chakras: A Beginner's Overview

by Keri Nelson on September 30, 2023

Everything around us is made of energy--even our clothes, furniture, & books! Our bodies are made up of energy too.

Our thoughts are "vibrations." You vibrate at different frequencies whether it is of fear, shame, guilt, love, abundance, or joy. The vibrations have various frequencies.

The Universe speaks "frequency" and responds accordingly....like attracts like. If you are vibrating at a low frequency, you are inviting feelings of sadness, disappointment, and fear. If you are vibrating at a high frequency, you are welcoming a positive mood, improved self esteem, and overall happiness into your life.

The Universe doesn't distinguish good from bad. It just knows to bring more of what you are focusing your energy on.

WHAT ARE CHAKRAS?

We have 7 primary Chakras (Energy Centers). The word "Chakra" comes from the Sanskrit word meaning, "wheel." Imagine wheels spinning clockwise at 7 points in your body which run along the length of your spine, from the pelvic floor to the crown of your head.

The Chakras push "life force energy" (aka Prana) through your body. Energy can become sluggish and stagnant which can shrink, enlarge, or make the Chakra dirty. It is important to clear your Chakras on a daily basis to bring harmony and overall well being to your life.

Every chakra rotates at a certain frequency and speed. This frequency and speed can change due to many factors such as thought patterns, diet, lifestyle choices, etc. When you do something that is out of alignment for your highest good, the wheel slows down, gets darker, shrinks, gets bigger, or stops.

Chakra imbalances affect your mind, body, and spirit. If you ignore these blockages, you are denying something that needs to be healed inside of you. Whether it is physical, mental, or emotional pain, you can bet it is linked to a specific Chakra that is in need of healing. Each chakra is affected by feelings, emotions, and states of being.

In order to get the flow of energy back to a harmonious state, there are various things you can do.

*CHAKRA COLORS*

Each chakra is associated with a certain color. The seven chakra colors follow a specific pattern: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Color is energy vibrating at certain speeds.

The chakra colors are like a rainbow that flow through your body. Variations in Chakra color can indicate an individual's current state of health and spiritual wellness. When a Chakra color is clear with clarity, the person is considered to be pretty healthy. If there are discolorations (muddy/markings), that means there are imbalances or blockages (i.e. illness, depression, unprocessed emotions, addiction, etc.)

Recognizing when you are feeling "off" is another indication that one of your Chakras is needing attention. Blocked chakras can also manifest themselves in different physical ways such as headaches, indigestion, back pain, stomach pain, etc.

  • Red = Root Chakra > Located at the spine/pelvic floor and is related to issues of physical security (worries about finances, possessions, safety, needs, career & home).

  • Orange = Sacral Chakra > Located in between your belly button and base of your spine and is related to sexuality, creativity, addiction, & body appearance/weight/sleep patterns.

  • Yellow = Solar Plexus > Located right behind your belly button and is affected by thoughts and feelings about personal power, will, self esteem, & control.

  • Green = Heart Chakra > Located in the center of your chest and is linked to relationships (unconditional love, attachment, forgiveness, lack of forgiveness, & healing).

  • Blue = Throat Chakra > Located in the area of the Adam's apple and is related to communication, speaking your truth, self expression, and asking for your needs to be met.

  • Indigo = Third Eye > Located between your two eyes. It is the eye of your True Self or your Higher Self and is associated with thoughts about the future, past, and your beliefs about spirits.

  • Violet = Crown Chakra > Located inside the top of your head and is related to your Spiritual life and experiences, connection to the Divine, sense of oneness, pure consciousness, & transcendence.

HOW DO I CLEAR & BALANCE MY CHAKRAS?

Everyday we encounter fear based thoughts from our family, peers, media, etc. We absorb this fearful energy into our chakras.

Before you go to bed, I encourage you to spend 5 minutes clearing & balancing your Chakras. When you CLEAR, you are releasing negative thoughts. When you BALANCE, you are making sure all the chakras are the same size.

OPTIONS:

*Eat fruits and vegetables that coordinate with the color of each Chakra that you are wanting to clear and balance. Make sure the food is grown from the soil--good old Mother Nature! For example, eat a banana if you want to address your solar plexus.

*Visualization Exercise: Close your eyes. Imagine a vacuum hose entering the top of your head and making its way throughout your body and sucking up any stagnant, negative, & unhealthy energy. After doing that, imagine a bright white light entering the top of your head and filling every part of your body to remove any darkness. While you are doing this exercise, inhale through your nose slowly and hold for 3 seconds. Then breathe out slowly through your mouth getting rid of any negative energy.

*Exercise: Get your body moving! This helps push stagnant energy through your body. Think of it like a gentle push to say goodbye to bad energy. Walk, run, jump, swim....whatever you love to do that keeps your body active. Yoga is also another wonderful option! Even if it is for 10 minutes, every little bit helps. Right before I exercise I SET AN INTENTION of unblocking the stuck energy instead of setting a goal for calories burned. It is has changed my life tremendously!

*Meditate: Spend as little as 5 minutes a day to teach yourself to drown out the noise and static in life. During meditation we can get in touch with our inner Self where we can channel prana (life force energy) and just be. There are many videos on YouTube at various lengths depending on how long you have available to meditate. I personally love the InSight Timer App which is completely free!

*Listen to Binaural Beats: This is a type of sound wave therapy that uses various frequencies to encourage relaxation, decrease anxiety, and promote positivity. Since we are made of energy, these frequencies can also help to get the energy moving freely. I like to go to YouTube and type in Binaural Beats Chakra Clearing---there are a lot to choose from.

BONUS:

Epsom Salt Bath: Fill your tub with warm water and add 1-3 cups of Epsom Salt. I like to use the Dr. Teal's brand which offer various scents (Note: Contains Magnesium). You can find it at Target, Walgreens, Amazon, etc. Turn the lights off and light a candle. Put on some quiet music. I use the InSight Timer App to find some nice relaxing music for free. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose for 3 seconds, hold for 3 seconds, and exhale through your mouth for 6 seconds. Repeat this 6 times. With each INHALE, envision a radiant white cleansing light entering through the top of your head and flowing down through your entire body. With each EXHALE, picture the bath water acting like a magnet, attracting and drawing out all the negative energy from your body.

Chakras are fascinating to me and every morning I take the time to clear and nurture them---it really makes a positive impact on my day. It's as if I am unloading some heavy baggage from my energy field.

The rainbow of Chakras hold so much insight and power to help you heal your body. All you have to do is be aware and follow the practices above to start feeling like a whole new person
